What’s the Healthcare Situation in The Villages?

The Villages, FL, isn’t just golf carts and happy hour — healthcare access is a major factor for anyone thinking about living here. With a community of over 140,000 (and growing), local medical infrastructure has to keep up. Here’s what you need to know, without spin or bias.

The Villages Health (TVH) – Under New Management

The Villages Health (TVH) has been the main local provider of primary and specialty care. They operate multiple centers throughout the area, including the Center for Advanced Healthcare at Brownwood.

In 2025, TVH filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy after Medicare billing issues came to light. As a result, CenterWell, a senior-focused division of Humana, has stepped in to acquire and manage operations.

CenterWell has stated they are “payor-agnostic,” meaning they intend to work with multiple Medicare plans — not just Humana. The transition is ongoing, but current statements emphasize that patient care will continue without disruption.

Local Hospitals & Emergency Care

You’ve got several options nearby, including both emergency and specialist services:

  • UF Health Spanish Plaines Hospital – Located right in The Villages
  • UF Health Leesburg Hospital – About 12 miles away
  • The Villages Medical Center – Ambulatory care hospital affiliated with UF Health
  • VA Outpatient Clinic – For veterans residing in or near The Villages

For more advanced treatments or surgeries, some residents are referred to hospitals in Orlando, Gainesville, or Ocala.

Specialty Care Access

Through The Villages Health and its partners, the following specialties are available locally:

  • Cardiology
  • Neurology
  • Endocrinology
  • Urology
  • Rheumatology

TVH’s website has a full list of services and providers. Some patients still travel for advanced cancer care or rare specialty procedures.

Insurance: Medicare, Medicare Advantage & Medicaid

  • Most residents use Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans.
  • TVH has historically accepted many plans. CenterWell says it will continue doing so.
  • Always verify that your preferred plan and provider network align — especially during the TVH transition.
  • Medicaid is less commonly discussed due to the age demographic, but if you’re eligible, you’ll need to confirm acceptance on a case-by-case basis.

The Bottom Line

Healthcare in The Villages is robust for day-to-day needs: primary care, urgent care, and common specialties are all here. The recent shakeup with TVH is something to watch, but for now, patient continuity remains the goal.

For more serious or niche health issues, you may need to travel — but between UF Health, CenterWell, and regional hospital systems, you’ve got options.

If you’re planning a move to The Villages or already live here, take time to review your insurance, locate your nearest hospitals, and establish relationships with care providers before you need them.
